In 2023, water companies in England discharged raw sewage into rivers and coastal waters for over 3.6 million hours, according to Environment Agency monitoring data. That is an average of more than 10,000 hours a day. The affected waters include rivers used for swimming, kayaking, and fishing, as well as beaches that carry official bathing designations.

Surfers Against Sewage recorded over 4,300 sewage alerts at monitored beaches in 2023 alone. Water companies have faced record fines for repeated breaches. Meanwhile, Ofwat has approved household bill increases averaging 36% between 2025 and 2030, partly to fund infrastructure improvements that regulators and shareholders have deferred for decades.
