There is a well-worn version of civic engagement that most people have stopped believing in: sign the petition, share the post, repeat until the algorithm loses interest. It asks very little and, mostly, achieves very little.
Contacting your elected representative is different. MPs have a legal duty to respond to constituent correspondence. When enough constituents raise the same concern, an MP has a duty to carry it forward – to ask questions in committee, raise the issue in debate, write to the relevant Secretary of State. The mechanism is real. It just goes almost entirely unused, because the gap between feeling something and sending an effective email is wider than it looks.
Writing a credible letter takes time, research, and a degree of confidence in what you are actually asking for. Identical template campaigns, coordinated by campaign groups, are easy to spot and easier to discount. A genuine letter from a constituent, in their own words, citing real evidence, is not.
